Plot [ ]
The episode begins with Grif and Simmons standing on top of Red Base, seemingly on lookout duty. Simmons asks Grif if he knows why they are in Blood Gulch, but Grif misinterprets the question and assumes Simmons is talking about why they be in the universe and their purpose in it and gives a long answer regarding whether there is a God or not. Simmons informs Grif of the mistake in his reply and asks if Grif would like to talk about information technology, simply Grif refuses.
Meanwhile, Church and Tucker are spying on the two Reds via the scope of Church building's sniper rifle. Tucker asks what the two are doing, and Church says they are but talking and that Tucker is being annoying for continually asking that question. Tucker then says he'due south non able to run across annihilation because he doesn't have the sniper burglarize, to which Church replies that he hates him.
Back at Red base, Grif and Simmons continue their conversation, talking virtually finding aliens to fight, when Sarge orders them down.
Transcript [ ]
Pan up from the basis and close in on 2 soldiers on top of a base, 1 clad in maroon armor, Simmons, the other in orange, Grif.
Simmons: Hey.
Grif: Yeah?
Simmons: You e'er wonder why we're here?
Grif: It's one of life's bang-up mysteries isn't it? Why are nosotros hither? I mean, are nosotros the production of some cosmic coincidence, or is at that place really a God watching everything? Y'all know, with a programme for united states and stuff. I don't know, man, merely information technology keeps me up at night.
Both stare at each other in silence.
Simmons: ...What?! I mean why are we out here, in this canyon?
Grif: Oh. Uh... yep.
Simmons: What was all that stuff about God?
Grif: Uh...hm? Nothing.
Simmons: Yous wanna talk about it?
Grif: No.
Simmons: You sure?
Grif: Yeah.
Simmons: Seriously though, why are we out here? As far as I can tell, it's simply a box canyon in the middle of nowhere. No mode in or out.
Grif: Mm hmm.
Simmons: The only reason that we prepare a Ruby Base here, is considering they have a Blue Base over there. And the only reason they accept a Blue Base over there, is because we have a Red Base here.
Grif: Yeah. That's because we're fighting each other.
Simmons: No, no. Just I mean, even if we were to pull out today, and if they would come accept our base, they would take two bases in the middle of a box canyon. Whoopdee-fucking-doo.
Grif: What'southward up with that anyway? I mean, I signed on to fight some aliens. Next matter I know, Master Chief blows upwards the whole Covenant armada and I'm stuck in the middle of nowhere, fighting a bunch of blue guys.
Zoom in on ii soldiers watching Grif and Simmons from atop a cliff, one wielding a sniper burglarize and in cobalt armor, Church, the other standing behind him in aqua armor, Tucker.
Tucker: What're they doing?
Church building slowly turns around to face Tucker, lowering his rifle.
Church: (aggravated) What?
Tucker: I said, "What are they doing at present?"
Church building: (frustrated) God damn, I'1000 getting then sick of answering that question!
Tucker: (defensively) You have the fucking rifle, I tin't see shit. Don't bowwow at me because I'm non going to but sit up hither and play with my dick.
Church building: (interrupting) Okay, okay, await... they're merely standing there and talking, okay? (getting angry) That'south all they're doing. That's all they ever do, is simply stand there and talk. That's what they were doing final week, that's what they were doing when y'all asked me v minutes ago. So, 5 minutes from now, when y'all ask me, "What are they doing?" my answer's gonna be, "They're nonetheless just talking, and they're nonetheless but standing at that place!"
Both fall silent.
Tucker: ...What're they talking almost?
Church: ...You know what? I fucking detest yous.
Cut back to Grif and Simmons.
Grif: Talk about a waste of resources. I mean, we should exist out there finding new and intelligent forms of life... you know, fight them.
Simmons: Yeah, no shit. That'southward why they should put usa in charge.
Cut to a depression angle shot of a soldier in red armor, Sarge, who is seen looking up at Simmons and Grif.
Sarge: Ladies, front and heart on the double!
Simmons: Fuck.
Grif: Yes, sir!
Fade to black.
Trivia [ ]
- Simmons has the first line of the series.
- The beginning scene is done over again with aliens in one of the alternate endings of Episode 100.
- This episode marks the first use of the sniper burglarize joke as well every bit the question of "Do y'all ever wonder why we're here?", which has been repeated throughout the residue of the series, albeit in unlike tones and context.
- Simmons and Grif's conversation about having two bases in a boxed canyon is referenced by Tucker and Church building's conversation in The Wrong Oversupply.
- In this episode, information technology seems that Grif and Simmons' personalities take been switched.
- This episode marks the simply direct mention of Master Master. Later, he indirectly appears in Retention Arrears (where a Halo 3 cutscene where 343 Guilty Spark fires a laser at Chief Chief is played), and is mentioned in some PSAs, with an actual physical advent on Build a Better Blood Gulch.
- This episode has been remade twice past Rooster Teeth. Information technology was re-shot using the PC version of Halo: Combat Evolved as function of the remastering of past seasons to improve production quality. Additionally, a remade version was included with the limited edition of Halo 3, made using the Halo 3 Beta engine on Valhalla.
- While Geoff Ramsey and Gus Sorola recorded their lines in Burnie Burns' apartment, Jason SaldaƱa did so over the phone, repeating the lines Burnie fed him.
- The original cutting had Sarge's line performed by Burnie. It has ever since been replaced with a Matt Hullum re-recording.
